San Diego Golf Course Review

Carlton Oaks Golf Club | San Diego California golf course review

Carlton Oaks is a Perry Dye 7200 yard championship design that was awarded 3 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play. Located just 20 minutes from downtown San Diego and opened in 1989, this par 72 layout allows unrestricted walking and is considered to be one of the best golfing values in the region. There also is a lodge on property with 60 comfortable rooms, some equipped with full kitchens.

The golf course features meandering creeks, majestic lakes and more than 400 mature trees that typically line the fairways - along with the Dye signature railroad ties. Water comes into play on many holes in some shape or form, creating a significant wildlife habitat. There are five sets of tees that afford golfers with the opportunity to make a round here as uncomplicated or as challenging as they like.

The Casablanca Café - located in the clubhouse, is known as the best place to dine for breakfast, lunch or dinner in Santee. Dinners are Italian fusion - with a nice variety of options available. The lounge and outdoor patio are also local favorites. There is a pro shop on property, and practice facilities include putting and chipping greens plus a grass/mat driving range..

The five sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 7225 yards/146 slope, 6700 yards/139 slope, 6140 yards/132 slope for men and 143 for women, 5706 yards/125 slope for men and 138 for women and 5044 yards with a slope of 125 for ladies hitting from the forward sets. 100, 150 and 200 yard markers are situated on the cart paths and fairways of all par fours and fives, and color coded flags indicate front, middle and back pin placements on the medium sized greens, which present a variety of shapes and degrees of undulation.

Over 100 sand bunkers and waste areas dot the course and ponds and streams run alongside or cross the fairways on 13 holes. The terrain is mildly rolling with generous fairway mounding - often with sand traps built right in .The bent grass greens and rye over-seeded fairways were in very good shape on our February 2007 visit. As the slope ratings indicate - this is a challenging experience for all levels of golfers.

With a 60-room lodge, large heated swimming pool and hot tub, banquet facilities, restaurant and patio plus lounge with live weekend entertainment, Carlton Oaks is a local favorite. The Pete Dye trademarks - deep pot bunkers, railroad ties, and peninsula lake greens are all here. For more info, visit our page for the property, with dirct link to their website by clicking here.
