Four sets of tees are rather evenly interspersed, providing golfers with opportunities to play to distances and slopes measuring 6404 yards/132 slope, 6023 yards/127 slope, 5626 yards/123 slope and 5054 yards with a slope of 126 for women playing from the forward tees. All carts are equipped with GPS for accurate yardage and hole location information. On course yardage markers are designated by color coded posts on the sides of the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, with some sprinkler heads also measured to the center of the green.
Water hazards come into play in some shape or form on 9 holes, including the beautiful par three second, which is short but tough with a pond to the right and trees snuggled in close to the left of the extremely sloping, double tiered putting surface. The greens throughout this layout are quick and true-rolling, and usually quite undulating, with deep bunkers often protecting either or both sides.
In total there are 58 soft sand bunkers situated greenside or along the landing zones of the rolling fairways, which are tree lined throughout. The extremely undulating terrain features some elevated tees and greens, and a variety of uphill and downhill approach shots. Judging the correct club to use (sometimes up to 2 clubs less or extra) is of paramount importance to scoring well here.
There are some generous cart path rides through the residential community, which is quite beautifully landscaped. If you like hilly courses with significant elevation changes from tee to green, you will revel in the layout at Carmel Mountain Ranch.
