DOUBLE TREE GOLF RESORT (858-672-9100)
San Diego Golf Course Review 2/21/07
The DoubleTree golf course is a centerpiece of the DoubleTree Resort San Diego - centrally located to many of the area's top business and attractions and less than 25 minutes from the San Diego International Airport. The resort features 174 spacious and extremely comfortable guest rooms and suites, 14,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor meeting/event facilities, the Terrace Café and Mulligan's Restaurant/lounge, a business center, 5 tennis courts, a 5,500 square foot fitness facility with steam and sauna, 2 swimming pools (with 5 lap lanes), massage rooms and lawn croquet. The golf course is an Arnold Palmer designed par 72, 18-hole championship facility with practice green and short game area (no driving range). There are three sets of tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 6428 yards/123 slope, 6018 yards/116 slope for men and 130 for women, and 5461 yards with a slope rating of 125 for ladies playing from the forward tees.
On course there are permanent yardage markers on the cart paths and on the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, some sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and color coded flags indicate the front, middle or back pin placements. There is a small pro shop with restaurant, patio and lounge all conveniently adjacent. Once at the resort, golfers have just a short walk from their rooms to the pro shop for check in.
The opening hole plays extremely uphill, as does the par four 8th. In between players will encounter rolling conditions on nearly every hole on the front nine, with numerous elevated tees shots and plenty of approaches that play considerably uphill or downhill. The back nine features similar terrain and throughout the layout the fairways are tree lined - but usually present significant room for error, providing a fair resort golf experience.
Many of the green complexes are raised, with grassy swales and collection areas adjacent that can make getting up and down a task. The medium sized, undulating bent grass putting surfaces are often guarded by deep sand bunkers. In total there are 64 sand traps located near the landing zones on the fairways or greenside. Water comes into play on just two holes. The par five 6th has a pond situated in front of the green and a culvert runs crosses the fairway off the tee on number seven, and also runs along the left side for much of the hole.
Despite the constant elevation changes, this is straight away resort golf - no tricked up holes and usually very little contour in hole design (no doglegs) on the mostly parallel fairways. Drivers on I-15 can see the uphill par four 8th from the freeway, which provides a glimpse of the rolling topography. Visitors can enjoy the convenience of staying at a resort that is reasonable in price - and conveniently located just a couple minutes off I-15 - and don't forget the signature Doubletree cookies!
