EAGLE CREST GOLF CLUB (760-737-9762)
San Diego Golf Course Review
Eagle Crest Golf Club in Escondido is a 3 1/2 star (Golf Digest Places to Play) championship design built along a wildlife preserve that is situated in the seclusion of the San Pasqual Valley. This wonderfully landscaped property features wildflowers, waterfalls and 8 lakes that come into play on 7 holes, making for a distinctive and memorable golf experience.
The clubhouse includes a pro shop and snack area with outing facilities on an outdoor patio that can accommodate up to 144 people. Practice facilities consist of a targeted grass range, putting green plus short game area with sand bunker. A recent change of ownership and management has resulted in an increase in the quality of maintenance, amenities, and service available at Eagle Crest.
There are three sets of tee boxes per hole, that play to distances and slopes measuring 6417 yards/136 slope, 6035 yards/125 slope, and 4941 yards with a slope of 123 for women hitting from the front sets. Besides the numerous water hazards, Eagle Crest has 83 sand bunkers of varying sizes and shapes that consist of soft sand and are beautifully sculpted. Water comes into play on 7 holes. Our favorite was the par four ninth - playing from an extremely elevated tee to a green complex with a pond in front, that creates the need for a very accurate approach.
On course yardages are posted on the cart paths at 100, 150 and 200 yards on all par fours and fives, and sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green. Color coded flags indicate the day's pin placements on the medium sized, mildly undulating putting surfaces. Though the greens are fairly flat, there are usually significant swales alongside
The fairways are contoured between dense bush and the surrounding hillsides, and some are extremely tight. Bermuda grass is over-seeded with rye during the winter months, creating a nice playing surface. In fact the entire course was in excellent shape on our February 2007 visit. The bent grass greens rolled quick and true and the conditioning and shaping of the sand bunkers was amongst the best we have encountered.
This is a beautiful course - and a highly recommended golf experience! Annual memberships and customized group outings are available, and golfers may book tee times via the internet or by calling the pro shop.
