San Diego Golf Course Review
San Vincente Golf Resort is nestled amidst the rolling hills of Ramona about 45 minutes east of downtown San Diego - a true country golf get-away. On our mid-February visit, we were very impressed by the layout and course conditions, especially for a course in this value price range ($65 prime time including cart in 2007). Along with the golf facilities, the property includes an AAA approved 28-room lodge with rooms that feature balconies overlooking the golf course. There is a restaurant and lounge, snack bar, an Olympic sized swimming pool with hot tub, banquet facilities and jogging trails.
Practice facilities include a targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunker, plus putting green. The pro shop stocks golf attire and accessories, and lessons of all kinds can be arranged with a staff of PGA professionals. On course yardage markers are positioned on the fairways and cart paths at 100, 150 and 200 yards, sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and color coded flags indicate front, middle or back hole locations.
There are 3sets of tee boxes on each hole, that play to distances and slopes measuring 6623 yards/132 slope, 6228 yards/129 slope for men and 145 for women, and 5501 yards/121 slope for men and 134 for ladies hitting from the front tees. The terrain is rolling with tree lined fairways and with some elevated tees, but there generally is room for error near the landing zones and greenside.
Golfers will encounter a significant number of uphill and downhill approach shots - some quite significant in slope. Proper club selection and good mid-iron play is paramount to scoring well here. This Ted Robinson design features medium sized, mildly undulating bent grass putting surfaces - land in regulation and low scores are very possible.
As the photos in this review indicate, the Bermuda fairways are over-seeded with rye for the winter months, providing high quality, green playing surfaces year round. The course is considered to be one of the area's most scenic, as it meanders through a picturesque landscape framed in giant oak and cottonwood trees, with spectacular mountain backdrops.
As a great value course, San Vincente is worth the ride. If you are staying on property, spa facilities and a fitness center are nearby, and Barona casino is just 15 minutes away.
